It sometimes pays to collect more energy in the first phase of the fight so you have a reserve to use in Phase 2 and especially Phase 3 which is more intense. Also note that there are columns the rocks never fall in such as the first column, so it can be a good idea to place evolved defenders there (frost elementals in the back column, rock elementals in the front), and Aetherlings on other columns (since they are much cheaper, they are easier to replace).
